Cain Park showcases Sondheim's repertoire

Reviewed by David A. Ebbert

Cain Park opened its summer season June 18 with You're Gonna Love Tomorrow-A Stephen Sondheim Evening. The production is a theater piece composed of musical vignettes from most of Sondheim's works. The evening is not a revue of Sondheim's greatest hits, but rather showcases the dynamic contrasts of the Broadway genius. The songs were handpicked by the composer himself, and are taken from virtually every show written, including the never-produced Saturday Night.

Cain Park's theatrical artistic director, Victoria Busser, who directed You're Gonna Love Tomorrow in Chicago to critical acclaim in 1992, very ably handles the directorial chores for this showing. The production features a completely new and very talented cast: Paul Alessandro, Adina Bloom, Christopher Chen, Toni Fromson, Marc Moritz, R. Scott Posey, Lori Scarlett, and Sandra Simon.

Ohio Ballet

I found the performance to bè first rate, with well-timed and in some instances very comedic choreography. The distribution of red ribbons among the cast along with R. Scott Posey's rendition of "Fear No More” was very symbolic, bringing tears to my eyes. I particularly enjoyed performances by Adina Bloom. She has a very strong voice with excellent projection and range. At one point I noticed a gentleman in front of me remove his hearing aid. All in all, I really enjoyed the vibrant performances by all the cast members and would definitely recommend that you see You're Gonna Love Tomorrow.

Tickets, available at the Cain Park ticket office, 371-3000, or at any Ticketmaster outlet are $12 center, $10 side ($2 more day of show.) The performance plays in the Alma Theatre at 8 pm on Thursday through Sunday evenings and closes on August 1. Kick back, relax and enjoy the show; it's a good one.
